Set in a church, the autobiographical, one-person play, CROSSING THE THRESHOLD INTO THE HOUSE OF BACH, opens with the character Dave seated at an organ in the middle of the night practicing Bach’s last chorale prelude, Vor deinen Thron Tret ich hiermit (Before Thy Throne I Now Appear). When an unseen youth minister at the church enters, Dave shares passages from his life as a blind artist, using music, humor and Simpson’s moving, poetic language to weave together themes of family, mortality, theology, failure and reaffirmation.
